Convert \\capitan\ Shares to \\viu.int.viu.ca\ Shares

How to move your \\capitan\ shares to \\viu.int.viu.ca\

VIU has changed how it names shared drive addresses. Previously, VIU used the path \\capitan.mala.bc.ca\. This has changed to \\viu.int.viu.ca\.

At a future date, the \\capitan drive path will be decommissioned. As such, it is a good idea to ensure your mapped share drives are using the current name.

Reminder: In order to either view or map share drives, you need to either be connected to campus internet, or to VIU's VPN service. Learn how to connect to VPN here: How to Connect to VPN

Identify your current shares and remove disconnected shares

  1. Click ‘Start’ and type “This PC” and click ‘This PC’
  2. Look under ‘Network locations’ you should see your share mappings:Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
note: Depending on which instructions you followed you may see your CAPITAN Shares start with “\\capitan\” or “\\capitan.mala.bc.ca\”. This is expected.
Anything that starts with “\\viu\” or “\\viu.int.viu.ca\” is already mapped accurately and can be ignored.
  3. If you find any drives with a red 'X', do the following:
    1. Double click on each share with a red ‘x’ to see if it reconnects, if you see an error like this:

It means the share does not exist anymore and you can follow the next steps. If the share reconnects and you see files/folders there is no need to disconnect it.
    2. Right click the share
    3. Choose ‘Disconnect’
    4. Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)The share should disappear and not come back
