Introduction
This guide will help you enable passwordless sign-in for your VIU Computer Account using the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Passwordless sign-in is an optional feature that can enhance both your security and convenience. By eliminating the need for passwords, you reduce the risk of password-related attacks, such as phishing and brute force attempts. This method relies on 2-Step Verification (2SV), using something you have (your mobile device) and something you are (biometric data like a fingerprint or facial recognition), making it more secure.
Enabling passwordless sign-in simplifies the login process, saves time, and provides peace of mind knowing your account is better protected against unauthorized access.
Services with Passwordless Login Capability
Passwordless sign-in is available for the following VIU services that use Microsoft authentication:
- Microsoft Office apps and the Office Portal
- VIU Email
- OneDrive
- Information Technology Portal
This is not an exhaustive list. Other services will eventually have this capability as well.
Prerequisites
Before you can enable passwordless sign-in, ensure you meet the following requirements:
- You have an active VIU Computer Account.
- You have 2-Step Verification (2SV) enabled on your account.
- You have set up the Microsoft Authenticator app as one of your authentication methods.
Instructions on setting up 2SV and set up the Microsoft Authenticator app can be found here: 2SV: How do I set up 2-Step Verification (2SV)?
