Time Zone Changes: How To Prepare For Possible Discrepancies

Body

Beginning November 1, 2026, most of British Columbia will remain on Pacific daylight time (UTC-7) year-round and will no longer set clocks back in the fall.

To support this change, Microsoft and Apple have prepared updates. The IT department will be pushing these updates out to all devices this week. During the transition, meetings scheduled for November 1 or later may appear at different times, depending on the device or application used to create or view them. The required correction depends on vendor updates and cannot be applied by University Systems.

For example, a meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. in Outlook on one device may appear as 11 a.m. on another. This issue may affect Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac, Outlook on the web and mobile devices.

What you need to do

  • When your computer receives notice to restart, please do so as soon as possible.
  • Check the time when scheduling or reviewing meetings on or after November 1, especially important meetings and meetings with participants outside BC
  • Avoid creating or changing non-essential recurring meetings that extend beyond November 1 until vendor updates are available
  • Include the intended BC meeting time in the subject line for important meetings on or after November 1
  • Use Outlook on the web to create or change meetings if you use macOS or iOS; it is expected to display these meetings correctly after November 1
  • Do not manually change your device time zone to try to correct meeting times

If meeting times do not match

If a meeting appears at different times on different devices or in different applications, You can try the following:

  1. Right click on the clock on your computer and click Adjust date and time.
  2. Check the Time Zone setting displayed on this page:
  • If you see Timezone set to (UTC-07:00) Yukon or (UTC-07:00) Pacific Time (British Columbia) proceed with checking and updating your calendar entries.
  • If you see Timezone set to (UTC-8:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada), look for "Set time zone automatically" to check if it is toggled to off. If it is off you can change your time zone dropdown to either (UTC-07:00) Yukon or (UTC-07:00) Pacific Time (British Columbia).
  • If your timezone is set to the old UTC-8:00 Pacific Time (US & Canada) option and set time zone automatically is set as On you will need to wait until you device has had the remediation script and patch applied before you can fix your calendar entries.

What happens next

Once you have confirmed you are on the correct time (UTC -07:00), check any appointments scheduled for after Nov. 1st. Adjust any that have an incorrect time.
