From time to time your computer may have problems connecting to all the displays. The combination of resetting the dispaly drivers and restarting the dockinst staion resolve most of these issues.
A few things to check before disconnecting the dock:
Do your monitors have power?
Push the monitor's power button on/off. You should see a message indicating that there is no signal source and then shut down. Sometimes you will see power LED lights indicating they have power blue/white or orange for a sleep state.
Does your laptop screen turn on?
If the laptop screen is not coming on, this is an issue with the laptop itself. You can push and hold the power button for 15 seconds to force it to shut off.
Does your wall outlet have power?
This may be a challenge to diagnose. Your best option is to look at items plugged into the wall and see if they will power on. If there is no power, you will need to email facility services.
Did you plug another device or smartphone into the USB-C connector?
Disconnect any extra devices plugged into the USB-C cable connected to the docking station. Reboot your main device (laptop). This may force and allow your laptop to re-sync to the docking station and monitors.
Reset Windows display driver
If your screen freezes or goes black, pressing this key combination will force a graphics driver reset without rebooting the system.
- Hold down Win + Ctrl + Shift + B
- You’ll hear a short beep (20-30 seconds) and the screen will flicker briefly before coming back up
If this does not resolve your display issue, then reset the docking station
Reset the docking station:
Steps to fix your docking station and monitor displays:
- Shut down the computer
- Disconnect your computer from the dock
- Disconnect any extra devices plugged into the USB-C cable connected to the docking station (such as a smartphone)
- Find the docking station and disconnect the power cable from the dock. (It's often a round cable and may have an LED light; it should be lit)
- Wait 2 minutes before reconnecting the power to the dock
- Turn the laptop on and log in
- Connect your laptop to the docking station with the cable
- Wait 30 seconds. Your monitors should come back online. If they do not, please contact ithelp@viu.ca
