How do I restart my docking station?

Summary

How to restart your docking station if your computer won't connect to your monitors and laptop.

Body

From time to time your docking station may not operate as expected and disconnect from monitors or fail to wake up from a sleep state.

Usually disconnecting the laptop from the docking station and holding the power button to turn off the docking station will allow it to restart properly.

A few things to check before disconnecting the dock:

Do your monitors have power?

Push the monitor's power button on/off. You should see a message indicating that there is no signal source and then shut down. Sometimes you will see power LED lights indicating they have power blue/white or orange for a sleep state.

Does your laptop screen turn on?

If the laptop screen is not coming on, this is an issue with the laptop itself. You can push and hold the power button for 15 seconds to force it to shut off.

Does your wall outlet have power?

This may be a challenge to diagnose. Your best option is to look at items plugged into the wall and see if they will power on. If there is no power, you will need to email facility services.

Did you plug another device or smartphone into the USB-C connector?

Disconnect any extra devices plugged into the USB-C cable connected to the docking station. Reboot your main device (laptop). This may force and allow your laptop to re-sync to the docking station and monitors.

Steps to fix your docking station and monitor displays:

  1. Shut down the computer
  2. Disconnect your computer from the dock
  3. Disconnect any extra devices plugged into the USB-C cable connected to the docking station (such as a smartphone)
  4. Find the docking station and disconnect the power cable from the dock. (It's often a round cable and may have an LED light, it should be lit)
  5. Wait 2 minutes before reconnecting the power to the dock
  6. Turn the laptop on and log in
  7. Connect your laptop to the docking station with the cable
  8. Wait 30 seconds. Your monitors should come back online. If they do not, please contact ithelp@viu.ca
