Who is the new Outlook for?

Microsoft offers two versions of Outlook: legacy Outlook and Outlook (New). Currently, Outlook (New) is in a preview phase.

While it boasts a modern interface and some new features, it lacks several functionalities crucial for many university workflows. It is designed for individual users in simpler email environments, not organizations with complex needs.

Does it replace the existing (legacy) Outlook?

Outlook (New) does not currently replace legacy Outlook. Both versions co-exist, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your needs.

Microsoft is actively developing Outlook (New), with plans to gradually add features and functionalities.

However, no concrete timeline for feature parity with legacy Outlook exists.

What does IT recommend?

Currently, we recommend all University employees continue using the legacy Outlook app.

It offers the full range of features you need for efficient communication and collaboration.

Why should I not use the new Outlook?

  • Limited Functionality: Lacks features crucial for University workflows, such as advanced calendar management, shared mailboxes, and specific add-ins.
  • Unsupported by IT: We cannot provide technical support for issues arising from using Outlook (New).

How do I stay informed?

We will keep you updated on the development of Outlook (New) and inform you when it becomes a suitable alternative for University use. In the meantime, please stick to the legacy Outlook app for your email needs.
