When VIU first rolled out 2SV we offered Hardware Tokens to employees who did not want to use their personal devices for 2SV or didn't always have their phone with them.
If you received a hardware token it should look like one of these two devices:
| Hardware Token - Variant 1 (Obsolete) |
Hardware Token - Variant 2 (Obsolete) |
Security Key |
 |
 |
 |
If you no longer wish to use a Hardware Token we recommend switching to the Microsoft Authenticator App if possible.
Even though Hardware Tokens are considered obsolete, they will continue to function for the foreseeable future.
The steps below will guide you through switching from a Hardware Token to the Microsoft Authenticator App or a Security Key.
Switching to the Microsoft Authenticator App (Recommended)
Thee steps will require you to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator App on your personal phone. If you do not wish to do so you will want to request a Security Key instead.
- Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app by clicking the appropriate link below for your mobile device of choice:
iPhone: Click here
Android: Click here
- Launch or Open the Microsoft Authenticator App
- If asked, leave Share additional data toggled off and tap Continue
- Tap Add work or school account
- Sign-in with your VIU Computer Account
- On the 'Let's secure your account' screen tap Continue
Note: You may be asked to sign-in to your phone multiple times via Face ID, Touch ID or your password, that is normal
- You may be prompted to register your device. If prompted, select Register.
Note: Registering your device does NOT give VIU access or control over it.
- Allow Notifications if prompted
- On the 'Account added' screen tap Done
- Go to https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo on your phone or computer and sign-in with your VIU Computer Account
Note: You can still use your Hardware Token for this login
- Tap or click Change next to 'Default sign-in method'
- From the list choose App based authentication - notification and tap or click Confirm
- You're done! Please open a quick chat with Hopper in the bottom right corner of this page and submit a ticket letting IT know you no longer need your Hardware Token. We will be in touch with next steps.
Switching to a Security Key
Security Keys are the replacement for the Hardware Token IT used to issue. Follow these steps to switch from the Hardware Token to a Security Key.
- Go to: https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo
- Sign in using your VIU Computer account.
- Select Add sign-in method.
- Choose Passkey
- Click Next
- Choose Security key
- You will then be prompted to create a PIN. Enter a PIN of your choosing twice, or enter your existing PIN if you've previously used this Security Key, and click Done
Note: Your PIN must be a minimum of 4 alphanumeric characters. There are no complexity requirements like needing a symbol, number, capital, etc. DO NOT forget this PIN as it cannot be recovered and will require resetting your Security Key and losing all Passkeys stored on it. Follow the steps in this KB to reset your Security Key.
- Touch your security key when prompted
- When the setup completes you will be asked to name your passkey. We recommend "VIU Security Key" but you can enter anything you want.
- Click Done
- Reload/refresh the page
- Click Change next to 'Default sign-in method'
- From the list choose App based authentication - notification and tap or click Confirm
- You're done! Please open a quick chat with Hopper in the bottom right corner of this page and submit a ticket letting IT know you no longer need your Hardware Token. We will be in touch with next steps.
