It is common for computers to experience issues that can be resolved by updating the software or drivers. Some issues that can be resolved with updates include malfunctioning monitors, unresponsive USB ports, malfunctioning webcams or label printers, and difficulties connecting to a network.
Some updates are automatic, but others require a restart or manual installation. Your IT department may suggest running updates as a first step in troubleshooting since many hardware and software components depend on them to function correctly.
Windows 10 & 11 Updates
- Search "updates" in the task bar
- Select "check for updates"

- If you have a “check for updates” option, click it

Restart the computer if/when prompted
Driver Updates (Win10)
- Search "updates" in the task bar
- Select "check for updates"

- Click the “view optional updates”

Select the > beside the word “Drivers”

Select any driver updates listed

Click “download and install”

Restart the computer if/when prompted
Driver Updates (Win11)
- Search "updates" in the task bar
- Select "check for updates"

- Under 'More options' click on "Advanced options"
- Find and select "Optional updates"
- Click the "Drivers" drop down list if it appears
- Select the drivers to install them
Keeping Up-to-Date / Best Practice
Like any machine, it can have issues if a computer isn't being maintained or used often.
- Restart computers, tablets and phones regularly (Daily is best, weekly at the minimum)
- Check for updates regularly (once a week)
- Leave campus computers powered on to receive updates (don't shut down at the end of the day, a restart is recommended, or sign out)
