Signing Into Your VIU Student Computer Account

This article will help you sign into your student account, which is required when using Microsoft tools for VIU coursework, accessing WiFi on campus, library and using VIULearn.

 

What is my student email?

Your student email can be found on the home page of your Student Record and will usually follow this format:  PreferredName.LastName@my.viu.ca. 

 

How to sign in / set up your computer account (email)

  1. go to outlook.office.com
  2. sign in using your @my.viu.ca email (see above)
  3. use the temporary password you were given
    • if the password expires, or you do not know it, click Forgot password?
  4. update your password to one you can remember in line with VIU's password standards
  5. sign out, then sign in again to ensure the new password is recognized

If this is your first time signing into your student account or if IT has reset your 2-step verification methods, you will be prompted that "more information is required." This request asks you to set up a 2-step verification method for future sign-in attempts. Follow these steps to complete the setup of your 2-step verification method:

  1. click Next on the 'more information required' box
  2. you have two options for setting up a 2-step verification method
    • to use the MS Authenticator App, follow the prompts on the screen
    • to use your phone for a texted verification code, click the bottom left link that says 'I want to choose a different sign- in method', then select Phone
  3. Once your 2-step verification method has been set up, you can use your new password and your @my.viu.ca as your username for most VIU tools (VIULearn, MS Teams, MS Apps, WiFi, campus computers, etc.).  The VIU Library will use your student number instead of email, but will use the same password as above.
