If you have multiple 2SV methods configured on your account then you can switch between them during login.
Examples of when you might want to do this:
- You normally use a Passkey in the Microsoft Authenticator App but the computer you are trying to login to does not have Bluetooth. In this situation you would want to use a Microsoft Authenticator Push Notification (also known as number matching)
- You normally use a Security Key but forgot it at home and need to use a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) provided to you by IT
Note: As of Feburary 1, 2027 Microsoft is defaulting to using Passkeys for 2SV if you have one configured. If you have (re-)setup the Microsoft Authenticator App anytime after October 1, 2026 you will automatically have a Passkey created for you in the Microsoft Authenticator App. VIU IT cannot change this behaviour set by Microsoft.
How to change 2SV methods at login
- When prompted for 2SV you will see the link "I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now" or "Sign in another way", click whichever you see
- You will be taken to a page listing your available 2SV methods, select the one you have available to you
- Complete the login
If none of the methods listed are available to you Contact IT requesting a Temporary Access Pass (TAP).
