Download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smart phone from the Google Play or iOS App Store
Open the Additional security verification page on your computer
You may be asked to log in. Enter your @viu.ca email address and click Next
Enter your password and click Sign in
Click Next on the More information is required screen.
On the Step 1: How should we contact you? screen, select select Mobile app
Choose Receive notifications for verifications or Use verification code, then click Set up
You will see a QR code you have to scan with your phone to set up the app.
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smart phone. Tap the plus buttonor Add account
Select Add work or school account, then Scan QR code
This will open the camera on your phone to scan the code on your computer screen. You might have to give the app permission to use your camera.
Once you scan the code on your computer screen, your account will be added to the app. Click on Next.
You will need to verify it worked. You will receive a notification on your phone to approve. Remember, only approve notifications you know you initiated (like this one).
Finally, when prompted, enter a phone number in case you lose access to your mobile app. Click on Done
Open the Additional security verification page
On the Step 1: How should we contact you? screen, select Authentication Phone
Choose Canada (+1), then type in your phone number
Choose Send me a code by text message or call me, then click Next
You will receive a text message or phone call (depending on the option you chose). Enter the verification code, then click Verify
Once the verification is successful, click on Done
If you don't have a cell phone number, or prefer not to use the app, you can request a hardware token with a digital display or audio readout.
After setting your verification options, fill out a request to have 2-Step Verification activated for your account.
